Analisette and Adrine were walking home from Charlotte's,figured the different atmosphere would be better than the constant reminder of Charlies death on their floor of the apartment building. "How was your steak baby?" Adrine asked. Analisette smiled,"Yummy,and your Pork Chops?" Adrine smiled back,"Very good,But do you know whats better?" Analisette looked at him shyly,"Whats that?" Adrine pulled her close so that they were face to face,"Having you in my life.No one has ever cared for me the way you have during this difficult time.Thank you so much Mami." Analisette pressed her soft lips to his. Eyes still closed and slowly backing away she said,"I love you Adrine." Quickly opening her eyes and realizing what she said she prayed that he would say it back. Adrine smiled and looked into her eyes,"Baby, I lov...[Seeing a commotion ahead of them at the apartment complex]Whats going on?" Analisette turned around to see what he was looking at. They both rushed to the scene and noticed everyone below was looking up.
Lolita had both legs outside of her window and the palms of her hands holding her inside. She looked at the ledge right of the window and told herself,"If I'm going to do this,I'm doing it right." As she began to climb to the ledge someone yelled from below,"Shes going to jump!" Lolita looked down and seen everyone from the building. "They watch,like they have always done,Awaiting my demise,If I jump where will I land? Not into their arms of grace! Not into their souls as justified! But into their memories of one less whore!" She thought. Standing on the ledge she closed her eyes and thought of Chris, thought of the love she had for him, then of the pain he caused and how he took her life. "Lolita don't jump!"Analisette yelled to her. Lolita opened her eyes and looked down to her and thought,"She has fear in her eyes.How could she fear for my life? How could she care? How could she give a shit when I have done so much pain to her?" Analisette looked at Adrine who was next to her,"Go to her apartment and talk her inside." Adrine nodded and ran into the building. Lolita watched Adrine and thought,"I wonder if he could talk me out of this.He talked me out of drugs.Not being an escort,but he did talk me out of drugs." Analisette yelled,"Lolita help is on the way just hang on!" Lolita looked to the sky and dug her fingertips into the cool brick behind her and thought,"If she only knew,I'm dead if I jump and I'm dead if i don't."
"Lolita,Its Adrine.I'm going to approach the window,okay?"Adrine said as he began to sidestep closer to the window. "Okay." Lolita said with tears in her eyes. Adrine couldn't believe what she was doing, but in his line of work talking people off the ledge is a requirement. "Lolita you don't want to do this." Adrine said powerfully. "What do you know Adrine!"Lolita said crying harder at her knowledge of the truth. "Your right Lolita I don't know why your on the ledge,but I do know your a smart girl and you have alot going for you." Lolita looked at him enraged,"Alot going for me! You have no fucking idea what I'm going through!" Adrine was shocked at her reply,"Lolita please calm down." Lolita ignored him and closed her eyes and thought,"Calm? Whats the meaning of that word? Gentle tones of speech and relaxed movement. The world is calm in this moment,gentle whispers of wind, maybe I should relax in its embrace?" Then from below someone yelled,"Lolita listen to what he has to say! Don't give up!" Lolita opened her eyes and looked, it was Rudolf Brushiwitz. Lolita remembered how she would ignore him, look at him with disgust. Now here he was trying to send her strength through his words. She cried. Adrine stuck one leg out of the window and sat in the opening and reached out his hand,"Come on Lolita,come inside and we can talk about this." Lolita looked at his hand then in his eyes,"Adrine,I'm dead either way." He replied,"What do you mean?Is someone after you because of Charlie? Cause I'll handle it myself if thats the case." She looked down at everyone looking up at her and shook her head from side to side,"They watch,but no one helps." Adrine tried to get closer,"Lolita Im here, I'm helping-Let me help.Come inside. Please stop this." Lolita looked at him as tears fell from her eyes,"Adrine I have AI-"
In that moment Rick creeped toward Lolita's apartment and seen Adrine in the window with his arm reaching. Rick allowed himself inside and began to walk toward him. "Who are you?"Adrine asked silently watching Lolita from the side of his eye. "Rick,Rick Stevens.Is Lolita out there?" Rick asked slurring his speech slightly still recovering from his drinks earlier. Adrine shook his head yes then said,"Rick I don't think now is a good time for you." Then Lolita said,"Ricks here?!" Rick began to walk over to the window fearfully sobering up for her sake.
Lolita watched as Rick poked his head out of the window unsure of what he was going to see. In her eyes Rick was so damn sexy with his jet black hair, grey green eyes, light skin,perfect full lips and not to mention good heart. He seen beauty in her when everyone else seen the ugliness of her life. Then he spoke,"Lolita what are you doing honey?Stop this,please." She replied,"Rick you wouldn't understand." Rick brushed his hair back,"You know,That's the second time you've told me that.When are you going to help me understand?" Lolita smiled. Adrine looked at Rick and shook his head in approval. "So are you going to come in here honey and talk to me so I could understand?" Lolita reached out her hand to Adrine who was eagerly trying to grab her hand then thought,"If I go inside I have to tell him I have AIDS, he will never see the beauty he did when he first seen me." Lolita snatch back her hand with a quick movement that made her slip.
Everyone gasped from below.Adrines eyes opened wide. Analisette prayed.Rick screamed,"NO!" The world stood still, every noise went silent.
Lolita felt and only heard her heartbeat....
